Harvard - cheaper than the universities from the Republic of Moldova

24 November 2010
Cristina Olari

From year to year, Moldovan universities ask students more money. In some cases, tuition fees have come to exceed those charged to faculty from other European countries or even Canada. Maybe you've already have a bachelor's degree and want a master degree, maybe you are studying at an university or will finish high school and want to choose your path to university studies ... Either way, it is clear that a famous degree can bring a brighter future. In fact, there are no people in this world who do not wish to study at Harvard or Oxford, knowing he/she will have a highly paid job.

The best universities in the world are famous not only for their teachers, for the conditions and academic programs, but also for excellent results in research field, Nobel laureates, the medalists and all published scientific works. Universities from Moldova are not in the top 500 best universities in the world, but they are noted internationally for the great tuition fees which are charged.

Not any high school graduate can afford admission to higher education. If they will not be among those that have passed the admission to the budget places, students will have to pay very high taxes. Studying abroad is a more complex project and perspective, and it is not just about "training" to obtain an occupation / profession, but also about creating unique opportunities to achieve academic and professional ambitions in terms of personality development, of "education" in a broader sense, with all the personal features and traits: character, aspirations, traditions, etc.., of how we perceive the reality and the socio-cultural environment we want to be part of. For example, in Great Britain only 47% of the total numbers of graduates from secondary educational institutions are continuing their studies at university and about 95% of graduates are employed within three months after graduation.

For comparison, Moldova is ranked among the most "educated" countries in Europe with over 80% of university admissions and only 30-35% of hiring according to the studied specialty / profession. A person becomes a person through education. We want a qualitative education.  And what do we have???  Present educational institutions are a collection of students from year to year. More quantity does not mean quality. Students come to the university as for rest because they are not imposed strict rules. They should know their obligations and if they do not comply with them would be expelled. What happens in reality? Once you have not passed the exam you can come to the additional exam session, then another extra session and then again until the teacher does not stands anymore and gives the passing grade. Do we really want these kinds of specialists? To enter the university, like Harvard, it is prestigiously but in our country it is a natural thing to us. Regardless of the knowledge we acquire during high school years, we are finally admitted to university.

In order to make students from Moldova to realize what it means in reality the educational process it is needed to restore the university at what it once was: when students were coming to class with responsibility and not to be late, were reading books when preparing for the seminars (today students read one book per semester), to invite professionals and not amateurs delivering courses, to offer students adequate conditions for study and not unheated basements and libraries with a small books collection. When imposing something them, firstly, we need to change the teachers (I am referring to their methodology and even way of thinking). Unfortunately, we are witnessing a suicide attempt of the higher education system in Moldova. Students have to tell things that they do not know and sometimes can not find them alone to capture their interest. You can not come to lessons with notes for decades, or unprepared and talk about what you ate today and how you go in life. Studies should be studies, and in case you want to offer moral support you can do it individually, in the end, this is also one of the duties of a teacher. The quality of education in Moldova is disappointing and makes no future.

It's painful, it's tough, but it's true what they say. Ask students studying abroad, for example, those who study in Romania, because most people are, what problems they faced in their new condition and you will hear numerous blames against Moldovan education, which makes it uncompetitive, so that together pupils and students must make some superhuman effort to recover such differences at the beginning and arrive at the same level of their colleagues do not come from Moldova. There is another one area where things are very bad: the quality of training of those who graduate an educational institution in Moldova and then go to work abroad, being in direct competition with other specialists. The quality of Moldavians training, especially if they have a university degree, is hopeless, so that poor graduates are finding themselves in an embarrassing situation. The leaving of Romanian intellectuals from Bessarabia in 1940, followed by the establishment of the Soviet educational system had disastrous consequences on education, culture and civilization of the Republic of Moldova. Today, these differences have started to moderate, but unfortunately, the path to achieving a respectable level is still quite long. Sincerely, I regret that I have to make these findings and please be assured that I was quite euphemistic in expression. With great regret, we can conclude at this point Moldova still has a long way to the real implementation of a qualitative education. This is the biggest problem of Moldova!

Salut Sergiu!
